JPL has posted 2004 UV1, which was announced today in MPEC 2004-U57 as discovered on Monday, October 25th by the Siding Spring Survey (SSS) in Australia, which followed it over a period of 5.377 hours. The discovery was confirmed today by Gianluca Masi's team with the Southern TIE (SoTIE) remote-controlled telescope in Chile and by SSS. (Neither set of confirmation observations was made during the lunar eclipse that happened early today UT). JPL puts this object's size at 0.975 km. (0.61 mile), and has the first highly preliminary impact solution six years from now on December 6th. (An impact solution, or virtual impactor, is not a prediction but rather a possibility that hasn't been eliminated yet, and most solutions are soon removed with further observation.) |
