Terry Lovejoy in Queensland, Australia has posted a gallery for comet C/2007 K5 (Lovejoy) with his discovery images. The illustration here shows part of the first 2007 May 26.340 image at full resolution (7.6"/pixel) with the comet at center, and, above that, a mosaic at 33.3% size made from the first image (comet to the right) and an image from May 28.347. North is up and east is left. This observing was done with Canon digital cameras using 200mm lenses. Copyright Terry Lovejoy, used with permission. Further astrometry has been published today (see below), and read more about this comet in June 2nd news.

WELCOME to A/CC's prototype daily news publication designed to be the viewing end of a planned autonomous 24-hour news service. The new tools and this publication format are working well enough now to share with readers. It is expected that this approach will require less time to maintain than our previous news and small asteroid pages, which were retired on May 14th. There's still more development ahead and there probably will be some glitches along the way, but this is what's needed to keep up with the increasing pace of minor-object news. The CRT page will be maintained separately for a little while longer, until all of this is working smoothly. And the CRT and small-asteroid ephemerides will be kept going.
Minor-Object News on 8 June '07
- "NASA's NEO Escapades," Center for Defense Information 7 June
- "Radio, TV personality fighting for Pluto's status," East Valley Tribune at the Arizona Daily Star 8 June - Quote: "His [Steve Kates] Web site follows a nationwide protest to the [IAU] decision, including a proclamation by the New Mexico Legislature that declares Pluto a planet." - Note: Contrary to many reports elsewhere, that resolution, which was to declare March 13th of this year as "Pluto Planet Day" and to recognize Pluto as a planet while over New Mexico, did not succeed. It passed 70-0 in the House but was still on the table ("action postponed indefinitely") in the Senate when the 2007 regular session and an immediate special session ended and everyone went home for the year.
- Bits & pieces: SpaceWeather.com for today has an image and a movie of a previously unknown object, saying "This morning a comet plunged toward the sun and, with [SOHO] looking on, it disintegrated."
Under the headline, "Weather will get worse," the Sidney Morning Herald today said that "Snow has been reported at Siding Spring Observatory, near Coonabarabran." - "SOFIA Flies to California," SETI Institute at Space.com 7 June - Quote: "The SETI Institute with its partner, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, leads the education and public outreach program for SOFIA as a part of the USRA [Universities Space Research Association] consortium."
Minor-Object Science on 8 June '07
- "H2D+ line emission in Proto-Planetary Disks" by Asensio Ramos, Andres with Cecilia Ceccarelli & Moshe Elitzur, abstract & PDF at arXiv.org 8 June - Quote: "Our study confirms that the 372.4 GHz H2D+ line provides powerful diagnostics of the mid-plane of Proto-Planetary Disks. Current submillimeter telescopes are capable of observing this line, though with some difficulties. The future ALMA interferometer will have the sensitivity to observe and even spatially resolve the H2D+ line emission."
NEOCP Activity on 8 June '07
The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 3 listings: 3 new
When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's NEO discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had three new listings. All of these were "one nighters." Major News counted a total of four objects listed on the NEOCP at some point on this day.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from an orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years. Once superceded or eliminated, a former impact solution has zero relevance to an object's risk. See Jon Giorgini's "Understanding Risk Pages" for more about all this.
