Minor-Object News on 18 August '07
- "The meteor hunter," Sacramento Bee 18 Aug. - Quote: "Robert Lunsford, operations manager of the American Meteor Society, who keeps the society's fireball log [said] 'This is one of the top 10 events I've had since I began recording back in 2005'... Just after midnight on Aug. 11, it was seen from Fair Oaks to San Francisco to Gilroy, and filmed by a Yuba City sky watcher, but the fireball made its most dramatic appearance above Tuolumne County." - Note: The article title refers to meteorite hunter/collector Robert Ward, and the article includes links to Larry Stange's all-sky camera video and a map showing observer locations. See also a copy of the same article with different photos at the Modesto Bee today, "Look! Up in the sky! Search for meteorites leads to Lode," as well as A/CC's Tuesday report with more news links and the AMS fireball log (event "274" is assigned to all possibly related reports, but some appear to be from separate events). {permalink}
- "Nerds? Yes. Also rock stars," Toronto Star 18 Aug. - Quote: "But while the majority of meteorites available to collectors in the past 15 years have come from the Sahara, [Patrick] Herrmann prefers hunting closer to home. Armed with metal detector, shovel and $2-per-acre lease, he's unearthed many a rusty tool during three expeditions to the United States -- but also, several prized meteorites." {permalink}
- "Where to go in search of meteorites," Toronto Star 18 Aug. - Quote: "No one can remove meteorites from federal land in the United States, whereas it's finders keepers if found on Crown land -- but only if you're Canadian. Hunters hoping to hawk their wares overseas must first offer the goods to a research institution under federal cultural and heritage laws." {permalink}
- "NASA STS-118 Execute Package FD11," NASA JSC at SpaceRef.com 18 Aug. - Quote: "[No] definitive correlations were found between the Perseids and the increased indications since half of the indications occurred during Earth blockage. Only a single indication occurred during the Perseids peak with both wings being continuously monitored." - Note: This is part of a discussion about why "compared to previous flights" there has been a "50% increase in the number of indications" from the Space Shuttle Endeavor's wing leading edge impact sensors. Endeavor has also taken an Astronaut-witnessed impact to one of its windows while currently in space. "MMOD" is an acronym for "micrometeoroid/orbital debris." {permalink}
- "Six from MIT win Fulbright student travel grants," MIT 17 Aug. - Quote: "Francesca DeMeo ... will travel to France to study at the Paris Observatory. While there, she will begin to characterize asteroids with a special emphasis on potentially hazardous objects [to] complete her Ph.D. work in planetary science." {permalink}

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from an orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years. Once superceded or eliminated, a former impact solution has zero relevance to an object's risk. See Jon Giorgini's "Understanding Risk Pages" for more about this.
