Eight objects reported inside ten LD

Eight transient natural objects are reported to be less than ten lunar distances (LD) from Earth today. Closest are 2017 EW, heading away from 4.61 to 5.82 LD, and NHATS target 2017 EV, outbound from 5.02 to 6.69 LD.

This report was updated at 1844 UTC to revise these traffic tables with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC and to note follow-up for departed objects 2017 DV15, NHATS target 2017 DC36, and risk-listed 2017 EJ1, as well as astrometry from early February for risk-listed 2017 BK30 and from October 2008 for impactor 2008 TC3. This last data extends the observation arc (as reported in MPECs) by 15 minutes from 18.84 to 19.09 hours, ending just one hour before the object exploded high above northern Sudan, an event with eyewitnesses and that left meteorites (see links). Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
