Five objects reported inside ten LD

There are five Solar-System small bodies known to be traveling within ten lunar distances (LD) of our home world today. Nearest is NHATS target 2017 DA36, which is outbound from 4.05 to 4.40 LD.

Earth passage I D ~Size Distance Today  Notes
4.05 LD yesterday2017 DA36 32 m  4.05 to 4.40 LD NHATS target - DOU

9.65 LD March 82017 DV35 12 m  9.83 to 10.00 LD exits ten LD, NHATS target

This report was generated at 1816 UTC with follow-up in today's DOU MPEC for three objects in the traffic tables here and for departed NHATS target 2017 DC36, plus astrometry from February and early this month for 2017 DJ16, 2012 DR32, and radar targets 2017 BY93 and 2017 CP1 (also a NHATS target).

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.

NEOCP Activity  on 11 March '17

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 60 listings

When last checked at 2359 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 60 objects listed. Of these, ten were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 67 listings on the NEOCP today.

To learn how observers use the NEOCP, see the Practical guide on how to observe NEOCP object at Suno Observatory by Birtwhistle et al.
