Six objects reported inside ten LD

Six asteroids are reported to be less than ten lunar distances (LD) from Earth today, all of them moving away. Nearest is NHATS target 2017 FT102, traveling from 2.87 to 3.33 LD, and 2017 GT4 gets its closest on this passage, reaching 3.49 LD at 0128 UTC.

This report was generated at 1640 UTC. No DOU MPEC has been posted yet today and the IAU Minor Planet Center reports that a computer problem continues to block services. Meanwhile, NASA/JPL Sentry's multi-day process of revising its impact risk assessments moves along. This is expected to mainly affect "low impact probability cases." And, if things weren't already challenging enough, A/CC at midnight UTC will switch over our semi-automated tracking of Sentry risk assessments from parsing NEO Program Office Web pages, which are about to disappear, to using a data interface that's part of the successor Center for NEO Studies (CNEOS) Web site. Hiccups are possible. By the way, JPL and all NASA Web sites are changing to secure HTTPS, so old bookmarks, scripts, and automated connections may fail but are easily fixed, by changing http:// URLs to https://.



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. NEOCP Activity  on 9 April '17

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 66 listings

When last checked at 2357 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 66 objects listed. Of these, nineteen were "one nighters." The Tracking News counted a total of 73 listings on the NEOCP on this day.
