Today six Solar-System small bodies are reported inside ten lunar distances (LD) of our home world, and the nearest, NHATS target 2017 FT102, is outbound from 3.33 to 3.80 LD.

Table updated at 2353 UTC. This report was generated at 1708 UTC. The Minor Planet Center said late yesterday that computer operations that had been stalled were resuming, and that they "aimed" to post a DOU MPEC today but "later than normal." We can expect a deluge of astrometry for known objects as well as new minor object discoveries, though all this fortunately has come during the observationally quieter time of the bright Moon. "All this" includes JPL revising its entire catalog of risk-rated objects and, today, taking down the original NASA/JPL NEO Web site that launched in early 2002 just as we at A/CC were beginning our Web venture. That's fifteen years of multiple daily links to JPL that are now permanently broken. And, until we find and fix all the instances, there are hundreds of bad links in just today's reporting. If you hit a JPL link that's dead and doesn't redirect to an appropriate new page, you can go to the great new NASA/JPL CNEOS site and start hunting.



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting on transient natural objects that approach the actually significant gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. NEOCP Activity  on 10 April '17

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 48 listings

When last checked at 2357 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 48 objects listed. Of these, nineteen were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 70 listings on the NEOCP today.
