Five objects reported inside ten LD

Today there are five asteroids reported to be less than ten lunar distances (LD) from our home world. Nearest is risk-listed intruder 2012 TC4, a radar/NHATS target that enters Earth's SOI (sphere of gravitational influence), coming in from 3.35 to 1.87 LD.

This report was generated at 1840 UTC with optical follow-up for 2012 TC4 in today's DOU MPEC and the first radar data posted yesterday.

Reading:  There is an interesting thread on the Minor Planet Mailing List about the fate of recently discovered 2017 TC1 (MPEC) and other asteroids that pass closest to the Sun.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.
