Ten objects reported inside ten LD

Ten transient natural objects are known to be within ten lunar distances (LD) of Earth today. Nearest is newly announced intruder 2017 UK8, which began the day inside the Earth-Moon system at 0.91 LD from our planet, passing us at 0.59 LD at 0517 UTC and moving out to close the day at 2.52 LD. Inside Earth's SOI, another new discovery, 2017 UL8 comes its closest this time around, reaching 1.16 LD at 0326 UTC.

This report was generated at 2350 UTC with five discoveries, all of which are in the above active traffic table: 2017 UP43, 2017 UJ43, 2017 UD43, 2017 UL8, and 2017 UK8. Today's DOU MPEC has the recovery of distant 208023 1999 AQ10, additional observation of departed 2017 UW7, and first follow-up for departed objects 2017 UL5 and 2017 UK1, along with follow-up for approaching 444584 2006 UK, departed 171576 1999 VP11, and distant 2003 UV11.
        Late news: We are just getting data on two more discoveries. 2017 UO43 (MPEC) will pass by at 6.58 LD at 0040 UTC tomorrow, and already departed 2017 UN43 (MPEC) went by at 4.89 LD on October 27th.
        Yesterday there were five discoveries announced. 2017 UV7 and 2017 US7 are in the above table, while the others have departed. 2017 UW7 (MPEC) passed our planet at 4.95 LD on October 26th, 2017 UQ7 (MPEC) at 5.79 LD on the 22nd, and 2017 UO7 (MPEC) at 9.18 LD on the 23rd. Yesterday's DOU had the recovery of distant 2013 BD74, first follow-up for departed 2017 UK5, and continuing follow-up for active objects 2017 UA6 and 2017 US.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. "Distant" is used here to describe an object that has come within ten LD since A/CC began these traffic reports (2007) but is not currently so close. When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 72 objects listed. Of these, 22 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 124 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
