Today there are ten asteroids reported to be less than ten lunar distances (LD) from our home world. Nearest are 2017 UL8, which exits Earth's sphere of gravitational influence (SOI), moving off from 2.32 to 4.51 LD, and intruder 2017 UK8, outbound from 2.52 to 5.62 LD.

This report was generated at 2046 UTC with today's DOU MPEC carrying additional observation of outbound objects 2017 UL8 and intruder 2017 UK8 and a whole lot of follow-up. There is first follow-up for objects active in the above traffic table -- 2017 UV7 and risk-listed objects 2017 UP43 and 2017 UJ43, as well as departed risk-listed 2017 UQ7 and, from August, 2017 QS1. Continuing follow-up is posted for outbound 2017 UJ6 and approaching 444584 2006 UK, plus departed objects 2017 UK5, 2017 TG4, 2017 TT3 (observing arc doubled from 9.48 to 19.93 days), 171576 1999 VP11, intruder 2012 TC4, risk-listed 2017 UL5, and, from March 2016, 2016 DY21, along with distant 2003 UV11 and 208023 1999 AQ10.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. "Distant" is used here to describe an object that has come within ten LD since A/CC began these traffic reports (2007) but is not presently so close. When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 71 objects listed. Of these, 32 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 100 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
