Eleven objects reported inside ten LD

There are eleven asteroidal objects known to be within ten lunar distances (LD) of our planet today. The three nearest are all headed away. 2018 BU1 moves out from 3.66 to 5.48 LD, risk-listed intruder 2018 BC from 4.18 to 4.66 LD, and 2018 BJ6 from 4.56 to 5.19 LD.

This report was generated at 2125 UTC with four discoveries: outbound risk-listed intruder 2018 BN6 (MPEC), inbound 2018 BE6 (MPEC), outbound 2018 BJ6 (MPEC), and departed 2018 BF6 (MPEC), which passed Earth at 6.64 LD on January 21st. Today's DOU MPEC has first follow-up for departed objects 2018 BZ5 and 2018 BD5 along with continuing follow-up for outbound objects 2018 BM5 and 2018 BQ, and for five departed objects: 2018 BF5, 2018 BH3, 2017 YH1, risk-listed 2018 BP3, and intruder 2018 AH (about which there is an interesting thread on the Minor Planet Mailing list today).

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 37 objects listed. Of these, seven were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 55 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
