There are ten asteroids reported inside ten lunar distances (LD) of Earth today. Nearest is outbound intruder 2018 CB, which begins the day inside the Earth-Moon system and recedes from 0.21 LD from Earth to 1.60 LD while passing the Moon at 0.75 LD at 1255 UTC.

This report was generated at 2310 UTC with the discoveries of five objects: See the above active traffic table for details on three of these: 2018 CH2, 2018 CF2, and 2018 CB2. The other two have already departed. 2018 CJ2 (MPEC) went by us at 7.82 LD on February 5th and intruder 2018 CS1 (MPEC) at 0.90 LD the day before. There is also one discovery announced too late to obtain the details we need for this report. 2018 CP2 (MPEC) is on approach and will be included in tomorrow's report. Today's DOU MPEC has first follow-up for departed 2018 CA1 and continuing follow-up for inbound 2018 CX, outbound intruder 2018 CB, departed risk-listed 2018 CK, and five other departed objects: 2018 BH3, 2018 BQ, 2017 YW3, 2017 YH1, and 2017 XS, plus distant 2012 OQ and 208023 1999 AQ10. The DOU also posts astrometry from 2012 through this January that we are still processing for some 90 close passers [see fat DOU update].

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. "Distant" is used here to describe objects that have approached Earth within ten LD since A/CC began these traffic reports eleven years ago but are not presently coming so close. The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 60 listings

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 60 objects listed. Of these, 29 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 107 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data.
