Eleven objects reported inside ten LD

Eleven asteroidal objects are known to be less than ten lunar distances (LD) from Earth today. Intruder 2018 DV1 enters Earth's sphere of gravitational influence (SOI), sliding in from 3.10 to 1.75 LD, and intruder 2018 DU leaves the SOI, traveling from 2.33 to 3.27 LD.

This report was generated at 1830 UTC with first follow-up for inbound objects 2018 DW1 and risk-listed intruder 2018 DV1 in today's DOU MPEC along with continuing follow-up for radar target 2017 VR12, which enters our traffic-reporting "bubble," and for outbound 2018 DT, plus additional observation of departed 2018 DD2. And today's OOC MPEC has astrometry from March 2016 for near-Earth comet P/2016 BA14 (Panstarrs).

Reading:  An observers' workshop will be held June 19th to 21st in Prague in the Czech Republic as part of organizing before and after observation campaigns from 2019 to 2022 in support of the NASA/ESA Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) mission, which will attempt to change the path of the moonlet orbiting 65803 Didymos (1996 GT).



Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object temporal distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. "LD*" indicates some uncertainty in object passage time and distance. When last checked at 2359 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 43 objects listed. Of these, 20 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 45 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
