Traffic Report  on 10 November '18

Thirteen objects reported inside ten LD

Today we have thirteen temporary neighbors known to be cruising by less than ten lunar distances (LD) from Earth. Nearest is 2018 VX1, which barely dips into the Earth-Moon system, coming in from 1.43 LD, reaching 0.99 LD, and receding to 1.04 LD. That's well inside our planet's sphere of gravitational influence, which the next two closest objects leave today. 2018 VA2 moves out from 2.35 to 3.46 LD and newly announced 2018 VR3 from 2.28 to 3.62 LD

This report was generated at 1940 UTC with seventeen discoveries -- three posted late yesterday and fourteen from early today. Of these, refer to the active traffic tables above and below for details about two approaching objects, five inbound, one passing, and two outbound. The other seven objects have already departed, including two intruders and a Moon buzzer. 2018 VO5 (MPEC, DOU) went by us at 0.37 LD on November 6th after passing the Moon at 0.96 LD the previous day. And risk-listed 2018 VT5 (MPEC) was at about a half lunar distance on the 5th (+/- 12 minutes uncertainty). 2018 VV3 (MPEC) buzzed the Moon at 0.51 LD on November 2nd, then flew by Earth the next day at 1.13 LD. The other four objects all stayed further away, out beyond seven LD: 2018 VZ4 (MPEC) came to 7.03 LD on November 2nd, 2018 VM5 (MPEC) 7.32 LD on the 4th, 2018 VU5 (MPEC) 7.85 LD the 6th, and 2018 VL3 (MPEC) 8.46 LD the 2nd. Today's DOU MPEC has follow-up for inbound 2018 TG6, passing 2018 VX1, outbound 2018 VA2, and four departed objects: 2018 UB3, 2018 TZ5, and risk-listed 2018 VC and 2018 TB.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. Object temporal distances are derived by A/CC from JPL Horizons data. See also current sky chart and object details (alt-details), ephemerides, and today's timeline.

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 97 listings

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 97 objects listed. Of these, 48 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 164 listings on the NEOCP today.

To learn how observers use the NEOCP, see the Practical guide on how to observe NEOCP object at Suno Observatory by Birtwhistle et al.

Impact Risk Monitoring  on 10 November '18

Summary Risk Table for Risk Assessments Updated Today   (last checks: NEODyS at 2358 UTC)
See the CRT page for a list of all objects rated recently as risks and our ephemerides page for a list of risk-listed objects under current observation.
The time horizon for JPL and NEODyS listings is 100 years, and both post impact solutions beyond that for some special objects.
For the latest official risk assessments, and for explanations of the terminology, see the NASA/JPL Sentry and NEODyS CLOMON2 risk pages.

Legend: VI# = VI count, Prob Cum = cumulative probability, PS Cum/Max = cumulative/maximum Palermo Scale, TS = Torino Scale (next 100 years)

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years. Once superceded or eliminated, a former impact solution has zero relevance to an object's risk. See Jon Giorgini's "Understanding Risk Pages" to learn more.
