Traffic Report  on 9 November '19

Nineteen objects reported inside ten LD

Nineteen transient natural objects are reported inside ten lunar distances (LD) of our planet today. The two nearest are newly announced intruders. 2019 VF5 flits through the Earth-Moon system, coming in from 3.93 to 0.50 and out to 0.51 LD, while risk-listed 2019 VB5 dives even deeper, moving in from 1.04 to 0.38 and out to 0.53 LD. A bit further away, 2019 UM12 exits Earth's SOI, flying away from 1.51 to 4.05 LD.

This report was generated at 2142 UTC with the discoveries of two passing intruders: 2019 VF5 (MPEC, DOU) and risk-listed 2019 VB5 (MPEC), and with the recovery of just departed 2012 VB37 (MPEC, DOU), which went by us at 5.97 LD on October 27th. Today's DOU MPEC has follow-up for inbound 2019 VN, outbound risk-listed 2019 VC, and three departed objects: 2019 UO13, 2019 UR12, and risk-listed 2019 VV.

Notes: Ten times the distance to the Moon (ten LD) has no astronomical importance but is a useful boundary for reporting about transient natural objects that approach our planet's gravitational sphere of influence (SOI), which has a radius of about 2.41 LD from Earth's center. This puts a focus on some of the most important and very best NEO observation work, representative of the much larger NEO discovery and tracking effort. When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 60 objects listed. Of these, 37 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 84 listings on the NEOCP today.
