Traffic Report  on 3 February '20


Daily Traffic Report Canceled

The great news is that the pace of near-Earth object discoveries and follow-up observing is increasing. On the other hand, for the first time ever, and for three days in a row now, there has been more data than we can process into a report published within the same day UTC. The problems are not just the sheer amount of data but also issues of the timing in its availability and a slow processing pipeline.

This puts an end to what has been a regular feature here in the The Tracking News since January 13th of 2012. (Before that, from 14 November 2007, traffic reports were posted on the home page, new each day and not preserved.) The final edition here was published January 31st. The experience and lessons learned from many years of doing this reporting will, however, continue on in the all-new and still developing Earth's Busy Neighborhood traffic page that went public on the first day of this year. This standalone page is designed to update incrementally as news happens and to eventually be fully automated around the clock.

So, to be clear, the daily traffic report is now canceled, but the rest of The Tracking News will continue to be published as usual, along with our original semi-automated feature, the Consolidated Risk Tables (CRT). We will also continue the timeline pages for awhile, despite problems there, but they will be retired sometime this year.

NEOCP Activity  on 3 February '20

The MPC's NEO Confirmation Page has 58 listings

When last checked at 2358 UTC today, the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object discovery Confirmation Page (NEOCP) had 58 objects listed. Of these, 37 were "one nighters." So far The Tracking News has counted a total of 76 listings on the NEOCP today.

An impact solution, also known as a "virtual impactor" (VI), is not a prediction but rather a possibility derived from a variant orbit calculation that cannot be eliminated yet based on the existing data. Elimination can come quickly with just a little further observation or may take weeks or months, sometimes years.
